Ice in October

October 2020 was a great month for lots of different weather to take pictures in. We had a lovely foggy morning with lots of dew drops everywhere, and then we had this…an early freeze with ICE and snow. Like a lot of people, I am not a fan of ice storms, it causes dangerous driving conditions, power outages, and its just dreary!

But this storm just made me want to pick up my camera and go outside! The ice coating the fences was probably one of my favorite subjects. There were so many different ways to look at it! It was cylindrical like the fence, but wasn’t completely wrapped around the wire in some spots. It was like an ice-shadow-fence.

Then I noticed the little tree, how some of the leaves and branches were encased in ice like an ancient bug in amber.

And the grasses poking up from the snow. The texture of the snow about the middle of this picture is a neat capture!

And these bermuda grass heads. The wind had been blowing them around the pasture just a few days prior, then the snow trapped them, bunched up together, and the rain encased them in ice. Again, I love the texture the snow in the foreground gave this picture.

When I got inside and starting uploading the images to my computer, I thought it remarkable how all of the fence pictures looked like they were edited from color, to black & white. It was very overcast, it was late afternoon, the sun was already setting and with a stark white background of white snow, the dark wire of the old field fence looked black instead of slightly rust. I should have adjusted the ISO on my camera and that would have changed this., but I’m so very happy with how these photographs came out, they are almost surreal. I have so many images from this day, it’s really hard to choose a favorite, but I think the ones above are my top 6. I added all of the different pictures to a gallery below because I experimented with subjects, angles, lines and depth and just had a lot of fun with it! My fingers were completely frozen by the time I was done, I think I spent nearly an hour out there looking at and trying different things. This was such a fun day for experimenting! I am enjoying my journey with my camera so much!
