Little House on the Prairie

Somewhere on Kansas highway 23, in Meade county, between the Oklahoma border and the town of Meade, Kansas this section of highway seems like such a long road to nowhere. I enjoy going this route for the twists and turns, the hills, the open prairie that seems to stretch for miles. And among those twists and turns and hills, sits this lonely, abandoned house on the hill. From a distance it looks like THE Little House on the Prairie from the old television show. For months I wanted to stop and take some pictures of it, but I was always short on time, or the light wasn’t “right”. I knew if I didn’t stop and take some pictures soon, I would regret it. You know, Kansas tornadoes, wicked thunderstorms, herds of itchy cattle… Then one afternoon on my return trip to Texas, the lighting was right, I was making decent time, would I get there soon enough? Why yes, yes I would.

This was taken with my Canon Rebel T6 and an 18x55mm lens with a telephoto lens attachment. I have an 18x135mm lens now, that I want to go back and take more pictures with to try to get more detail, but these slightly fuzzy, grainy pictures seem to suit this old homestead. Maybe I will even run into the landowner and be able to get permission for a closer inspection of this old house. I can’t help but wonder what life was like living out here miles from anywhere…in the hustle and bustle of this modern world, I think it just might be close to my idea of pure bliss…
